Iran's top prosecutor, key military figures sanctioned by Treasury over protest crackdowns | Unique News
The Treasury Department introduced sanctions on Wednesday in opposition to the highest Iranian official overseeing the prosecution of protesters and key army figures who’ve cracked down on demonstrations in latest months.
Iran has been roiled by mass protests over the demise of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old girl who died after being taken into custody by the regime’s so-called morality police for allegedly not sporting a hijab.
The sanctions introduced Wednesday embody Iranian Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, who issued a directive in late September for courts to difficulty harsh sentences to protesters.

Two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officers and two prime officers from Iran’s Basij Resistance Forces, a paramilitary drive managed by the IRGC, had been additionally sanctioned.

“We denounce the Iranian regime’s intensifying use of violence against its own people who are advocating for their human rights,” Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson mentioned in a press release.

Nearly 500 folks have been killed since protests started about two months in the past and greater than 18,000 have been detained by authorities, in line with Human Rights Activists in Iran, a corporation that has been monitoring the protests.
Two prisoners have already been executed. Majidreza Rahnavard, accused of fatally stabbing two members of a paramilitary drive, was publicly hanged from a development crane earlier this month in Masshad. Another prisoner, Mohsen Shekari, was executed on Dec. 8.
